I was going to start this with “Happy New Year”


But let’s be honest — we’re already a month into 2026.

 

January has come and gone in a blur of inbox chaos, “let’s reconnect” meetings and ambitious plans that may or may not have survived the first few weeks back. So instead of pretending we’re still easing into the year, let’s call this what it really is:

The real start of 2026.

 

Drive by Friday is officially back behind the wheel, and as always, this isn’t about bold predictions or shiny promises. It’s about what’s actually happening in the market and what that means if you’re hiring, planning to hire, or quietly hoping things will “settle down” before you make a move.

January is loud. February tells the truth.

 

January always feels urgent. Everyone’s back, roles go live, and there’s a sense of now or never.
But February is where patterns start to emerge.

 

Here’s what’s already becoming clear:

  • Candidates are active — but selective

  • Strong performers are listening, not leaping – they are considering their options

  • Flexibility and clarity still matter (yes, even in 2026)

  • “We’ll wait and see” is already costing some teams momentum

  • Commitment to the recruitment process in a time effective manner - candidates aren’t waiting - they are getting multiple offers

 

Same market? Largely yes.
New year? Absolutely.
But the fundamentals haven’t magically changed just because the calendar has.

 

The Hangover Month Effect

If January is the hangover month, February is when reality kicks in.

This is often when businesses realise:

  • The role they paused in December is still needed

  • The internal reshuffle didn’t quite fix the problem

  • Hiring “quickly” without commitment rarely works

 

The conversations I’m having now are less about if people need to hire — and more about how to do it properly this time around and how to get the best candidate to meet the need.

 

So, What’s the Takeaway?

 

If you’re a month into the year and feeling slightly behind - you’re not alone.
If your hiring plans are still evolving - that’s normal.
If you’re ready to stop overthinking and start moving - that’s where the wins happen.

2026 doesn’t need a dramatic restart.
It just needs momentum, honesty, and a bit of follow-through.
