The Hidden Fatigue in Today’s Workforce

Drive by Friday –
Over recent months, one thing has become increasingly noticeable in conversations with candidates and that is the level of fatigue/stress that is being experienced in the workplace.
It’s not always the obvious kind, but the quieter version that sits behind conversations about work, finances, career decisions, and daily life pressures.
More people are openly sharing that they are holding down two or even three jobs. Others are working weekends, running side businesses after hours, or constantly remaining “online” just to keep up financially and professionally. What was once considered a side hustle for extra income has, for many, become a necessity.
At the same time, many employees are hesitant to make career moves unless there is absolute certainty. The market has created caution, and with rising living costs and ongoing workplace pressures, people are carrying far more stress than they often let on.
As recruiters, we are often speaking with people at vulnerable points in their careers. Increasingly, there is a noticeable level of emotional exhaustion in the market. Burnout, reduced confidence, decision fatigue, and stress are becoming common themes in candidate conversations.
Many people are no longer working extra to get ahead — they are working extra simply to stay afloat. While mental health is a specialised area, there is no denying that workplace pressure and personal wellbeing are closely connected. This is where empathy, communication, and supportive leadership matter more than ever.
Small things can make a difference:
Checking in with colleagues
Managing expectations realistically
Showing flexibility where possible
Recognising that not everyone is operating with a full tank right now
Behind every resume, interview, and application is a person managing pressures we may not immediately see.
Perhaps one of the most valuable things workplaces can offer in today’s environment is understanding. Let’s help each other and check-in with the person next to you.
Have a great weekend everyone.
