WHY JUNE IS THE NEW JANUARY FOR CAREER MOVES

Drive by Friday

Drive by Friday –

When most people think about career changes, January tends to get all the attention. New year, new goals, new opportunities.  However, after many years in recruitment, I've noticed that June and July can be just as significant.

The end of the financial year naturally encourages reflection. Employees are reviewing what they've achieved over the past 12 months, considering where they're heading next, and evaluating whether their current role still aligns with their career goals.

For some, annual reviews have recently taken place. For others, salary increases, commissions, incentives or bonus payments have been finalised. These milestones often provide a natural point for people to pause and ask themselves, "What's next?"

This doesn't mean employees are actively looking to leave. In fact, many aren't. What it does mean is that people become more open to conversations about growth, development, progression, and future opportunities.  It's also a valuable reminder for leaders.

As businesses prepare for a new financial year, most organisations spend time reviewing budgets, forecasting growth and planning projects. But how often do we take the same level of care when reviewing our people strategy?

Some of the most productive conversations managers can have at this time of year aren't about performance targets or KPIs. They're simple discussions about career aspirations, development opportunities and what employees would like to achieve over the next 12 months.

Often, people don't leave because they're unhappy. They leave because they can't see what's next.

The good news is that EOFY presents the perfect opportunity to have those conversations before assumptions are made by either side.  Whether you're planning to hire, looking to retain key talent, or simply preparing your team for a successful FY26, a little proactive communication can go a long way.

After all, the start of a new financial year isn't just about setting business goals—it's also about ensuring your people can see a future with your organisation.

As the financial year draws to a close, here's hoping your budgets balance, your forecasts are accurate, and your best people know just how valued they are.

Have a fantastic week and remember – great opportunities often start with a simple conversation.

“A new financial year is the perfect time to talk about what's next."
