When Was the Last Time You Really Checked In?

Drive by Friday –

“How are you?”

Three simple words we probably say several times a day.

But here’s the question… how often do we actually stop and listen to the answer?

October is Mental Health Month across Australia, with World Mental Health Day on 10 October, and this year’s theme is Together We Thrive.

It’s a great reminder that looking after our mental wellbeing isn’t always about doing something big. Sometimes it’s the little things.

  • Having a coffee with someone instead of sending another message

  • Picking up the phone to a friend you haven’t spoken to for a while

  • Checking in on the person who seems a little quieter than usual

  • Making five minutes for someone when you could easily say, “Sorry, I’m too busy.”

And perhaps most importantly…

Asking “How are you?” and actually giving someone the time to answer.

We often think we need the right words, the right advice, or the perfect solution. We don’t.

Sometimes people don't need us to fix anything. They just need to know that someone noticed.

People Before Productivity

In the workplace, it’s easy to get caught up in deadlines, meetings, targets, emails and the never-ending “quick question…”  But behind every job title, every email address and every LinkedIn profile is a person.

Someone who might be having a brilliant day.

Someone who might be having a terrible one.

Sometimes, a genuine conversation can mean more than we realise.

As someone who spends a lot of time talking to candidates, clients, and people about their careers, I’m reminded constantly that recruitment is ultimately about people.

Not CVs.  Not job titles.  Not vacancies. People.

So, this Friday, maybe make a little time for someone.  Ask the question.  Put the phone down.  Listen.  And if someone says, “I’m fine,” but you suspect they might not be… Ask again.

Because sometimes the second “How are you?” is the one that really counts.

Drive by Friday thought

“You don’t always need to fix someone’s day. Sometimes you just need to be part of it.”

Have a great Friday - and perhaps make that five-minute phone call you've been meaning to make. ❤️
