IF WORK WAS COMPLETELY HONEST

Drive by Friday

Drive by Friday –

Two little reminders to end the week on a lighter note.

With plenty of heavy news and big issues floating around the world at the moment, sometimes it’s nice to keep things simple.  So here I am with Drive by Friday.

IF WORK HAD HONEST JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Sometimes the title is very different than the actual role and is just there to sound official, but the reality of the job is a little more colourful.  Let’s look at a few examples:

Sales Manager
Official:  Drive revenue growth and manage key client relationships.
Reality:  Professional problem solver, relationship builder, negotiator, and occasional therapist.  Oh, and motivating the team while keeping clients happy.

Meeting Administrator/Office Manager
Official: Coordinate meetings and provide administrative support.
Reality:   Jack of all trades.  master of calendar scheduling, note-taker, organiser, tech-fixer and the person who somehow keeps everything running when everyone else is busy.

Marketing Manager
Official: Develop brand strategy and market positioning.
Reality: Creative thinker, content creator, brand guru, trend watcher, and translator of “Can we make this go viral?”

Consultant
Official:  Provide expert strategic advice.
Reality:  Ask lots of questions, listen carefully, negotiate when needed, influence decisions and help guide everyone toward the win.

Recruiter (also known as ME)
Official:  Manage the end-to-end hiring process.
Reality:  Detective, talent scout, career coach, negotiator, market advisor and sometimes therapist.  All done balancing the needs of clients and candidates whilst trying to make the perfect match.

Behind every job title there is a lot more going on than what appears on the actual title.

What does your job title really say?

THE LITTLE THINGS THAT MAKE WORK SO MUCH BETTER

Not every positive thing at work is a big initiative or company announcement.

Often, it’s the small things that quietly make the biggest difference.

  • The colleague who replies quickly

  • The person who summarises the meeting, so everyone knows the next steps

  • The client who actually makes decisions

  • The employee who turns up prepared and ready for anything the day throws at them

  • The manager who says “thank you”

  • The teammate who steps in to help without being asked

  • and don’t you love that person who does some home baking or drops in with a coffee to share with their teammates?

None of these make headlines and they really do appear simple, but they make work smoother, better and often a lot more enjoyable for everyone around them.

CLOSING THOUGHT THIS WEEK …

Sometimes it’s not the title or the big wins that carry a week… it’s the small things done well by good people.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Good workplaces are built by good people doing small things well.
