WHY THIS INDUSTRY – IS IT AN EASY CHOICE?

Did you choose your industry… or did it choose you?

We know changing jobs impacts people’s lives - not just their careers.  It affects confidence, routines, finances, even identity.

But here’s the question I keep coming back to this week…

How do people actually choose an industry in the first place?

Most don’t grow up saying “I want to work in the Novated Leasing, Salary Packaging, or Fleet Management space.”

And yet — here we all are.

So, what really drives that decision? Is it intentional? Or is it exposure, timing… and opportunity landing at the right moment?

When people start looking, motivations are often clear:

  • Growth and progression

  • Flexibility and work/life balance

  • Better leadership or culture

  • Values and ethics

  • Finances (salary, benefits etc)

But industry choice?

That’s often far less deliberate unless you are already in the industry and you really want to progress a career in that space.

And then there’s where the search even begins.

LinkedIn, Seek, Indeed and other job-boards are still key.

But the behaviour around them has changed.

People are:

  • Browsing more than applying

  • Researching more than reacting

  • Taking their time to understand what’s out there

And increasingly, they’re using various AI tools to:

  • Explore industries they don’t fully understand

  • Translate job ads into something meaningful

  • Work out if a move is actually worth it

Which means…

People aren’t just looking for jobs anymore.
They’re trying to make smarter decisions about where they belong.

So, here’s the real challenge for our industry:

Are we making it easy for people to choose the industry?

Because while those of you already in the Novated Leasing, Salary Packaging, and Fleet Management space know the value …

  • The variety of roles

  • The long-term career paths

  • The blend of finance, operations, and customer experience

From the outside, it’s not always obvious.

And if people don’t understand it… they don’t choose it.

So how do we change that?

How do we:

  • Create awareness earlier

  • Tell better stories about what we do

  • Position this as a career — not just a job people “fall into”

Attracting fresh talent isn’t just a hiring challenge — it’s an industry-wide opportunity.

  • New people bring new thinking

  • New energy

  • New ways of doing things

And we need that.
